Kanatove Airfield originated as an air base for the USSR Air Force, serving as a primary training facility for the 60th Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots in Kirovohrad. This institution, initially founded in 1951 as the Military Aviation School for Long-Range Pilots, utilized the airfield to train generations of aviators. Constructed under strict secrecy, it was originally designed to accommodate heavy Tu-4 strategic bombers. Over subsequent decades, the airfield hosted prominent military formations, notably the 190th Fighter Aviation Regiment, operating various MiG interceptors, and the 44th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment equipped with Su-24M aircraft. During the early years of Ukrainian independence, the garrison demonstrated its high operational readiness by participating in numerous large-scale and international command-staff exercises, such as "Sea Breeze" and "Chyste Nebo." Despite this active service, the base faced drastic reductions due to military reforms and ceased operations in2004. During a subsequent period of dormancy, regional authorities explored various civilian conversion projects, including proposals to transform the territory into an international commercial airport or an industrial park, though these initiatives remai ned unrealized. A new chapter in the airfield's history began with the onset of Russian military aggression against Ukraine in 2014, when personnel redeploying from occupied Crimea successfully restored the facility's military status. Following the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the Kanatove air base has been repeatedly targeted by heavy enemy missile strikes, sustaining tragic personnel losses and significant infrastructural damage. Functioning today as a crucial reserve airfield, Kanatove continues to play an indispensable role in the logistics and tactical maneuvering of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, cementing its enduring strategic importance.en_US
