This paper highlights the tragic yet heroic events of 25 December 2024, when an Embraer E-190 operating as Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Flight 8243 sustained a direct strike from a Russian Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile system. Despite severe structural damage and the catastrophic failure of flight control systems, Captain Igor Kshnyakin and Co - pilot Alexandr Kalyaninov demonstrated exceptional airmanship by navigating the crippled aircraft over the Caspian Sea towards Aktau International Airport in Kazakhstan. Although the aircraft ultimately impacted terrain during an emergency landing attempt near Aktau, the highly professional and coordinated actions of the crew averted total disaster. Out of the 67 individuals on board (62 passengers and 5 crew members), 29 survived, while 38, including Kalyaninov, perished in the line of duty. The article extensively explores Kalyaninov’s life, detailing his profound connection to the aviation traditions of both Azerbaijan and Ukraine. Following a rigorous academic journey that included studies in Baku and Izmir, Kalyaninov enrolled at the Ukrai nian State Flight Academy, where he successfully earned his Master's degree in 2021 as a pilot-engineer. Notably, Academy records reveal that his entrance examinations prophetically included a focus on crew actions during emergency off-field landings - knowledge he valiantly applied during his final flight. In recognition of his ultimate sacrifice and extraordinary bravery, the President of Azerbaijan posthumously awarded him the title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan" on 29 December 2024. To honor his exemplary dedication, the Ukrainian State Flight Academy, supported by the Ukrainian Embassy in Azerbaijan and the United Diaspora of Azerbaijanis of Ukraine, established a dedicated memorial lecture hall and a Virtual Memorial. These commemorative initiatives not only preserve the historical memory of a fallen hero but also stand as a powerful symbol of the enduring Ukrainian-Azerbaijani partnership and the unwavering ethical standards of the global aviation community.en_US
