Abstract: This article examines the extraordinary life and engineering legacy of Wiesław Zenon Stępniewski (1909–1998), a world-renowned aircraft designer born into an ancient noble family in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine. A pioneer in the aerodynamics of helicopters and rotarywing aircraft, Stępniewski’s career spanned the most formative decades of 20th-century aviation across Europe and North America. His foundational discipline was forged at the Cadet Corps in Chelm, followed by an engineering degree from the Warsaw Polytechnic. The study details his early professional period in Poland, where he participated in designing the iconic PZL.37 Łoś bomber and served as the technical director of the Institute of Gliding and Motor-Gliding in Lviv. The outbreak of World War II and the Bolshevik occupation of Lviv abruptly halted his European trajectory. Fleeing the invasion, he briefly contributed to modernizing French fighters at Bronzavia in Paris before eventually migrating to Canada. There, he made significant contributions to De Havilland Canada by co-developing the DHC-1 Chipmunk and the legendary DHC-2 Beaver alongside another prominent Ukrainian-born designer, Vsevolod Yakimyuk.A central focus of the research is Stępniewski’s American period, which began in 1946. As the Director of Research and Development at Piasecki Helicopter (later Boeing Vertol), he became a "father" of the tandem rotor configuration. He developed the critical interference theory for overlapping rotors, which saved projects like the HUP-2 and led to the creation of the world's first commercial tandem helicopters, including the H-21 "Work Horse." Furthermore, the author highlights Stępniewski’s visionary work on the Vertol 76 (VZ-2), one of the world's first successful tilt-wing aircraft. This experimental machine featured innovative twisted wings and rotors designed to achieve vertical takeoff while maintaining high forward speeds, paving the way for modern V/STOL technology. In addition to his practical achievements, which earned him prestigious awards in Poland, the USA, the UK, and Sweden, Stępniewski was a distinguished academic and a professor at Princeton University. His "Opus Magnum," Introduction to Helicopter Aerodynamics, remains a fundamental textbook for aeronautical engineers worldwide. The article also reflects on his profound personal integrity and philanthropy, notably his substantial 1997 donation of Boeing shares to modernize a research laboratory at the Warsaw University of Technology. Ultimately, Stępniewski’s theoretical and practical work laid the foundation for modern heavy-lift helicopters and NASA's rotorcraft research, cementing his place as a global titan of aviation science whose roots are tied to the Ukrainian Podolia region.
