Frank Piasecki was a pioneering American aviation engineer of Polish descent who revolutionized rotorcraft design through the development of tandem-rotor helicopters, famously known as "flying bananas. "Following Igor Sikorsky, Piasecki became the second person in the United States to successfully build and fly his own helicopter, the PV-2 (1943). During this time, he also made history as the first American to earn an official helicopter pilot's license without any prior experience flying conventional fixed-wing aircraft. Piasecki's most significant contribution was proving the global viability of the tandem-rotor configuration. This innovation allowed for a significantly larger interior cabin, enabling the creation of practical heavy-lift transport helicopters. His first operational model utilizing this revolutionary design was the HRP-1 Rescuer, introduced in 1945.To meet growing military demands, he reorganized his enterprise into the Piasecki Helicopter Corporation, securing vital investments from prominent business figures like Laurance Rockefeller, which facilitated the mass production of highly successful models such as the H-21 Workhorse. Although he departed the company in 1955, his foundational engineering principles directly culminated in the legendary CH-47 Chinook, an iconic heavy-lift helicopter currently manufactured by Boeing that remains indispensable worldwide. Starting anew, he founded the Piasecki Aircraft Corporation, dedicating his career to avant-garde concepts. His visionary projects included the PA-59 "flying jeep" and the 16H-1 Pathfinder compound helicopter, which, despite remaining experimental, provided crucial theoretical foundations for modern vertical flight. Furthermore, Piasecki remained deeply connected to his Polish heritage, notably facilitating the US certification of the Polish W-3 Sokół helicopter, cementing his legacy as a relentless innovator in global aerospace engineering.en_US
