Abstract: This article explores the transformative journey of women in Turkish aviation, framing it as a central element of the nation's modernization and social evolution. The research traces the historical progression from the early 20th-century pioneers to the modern-day professionalization of female aviators across military, civil, and specialized aviation sectors. Key foundational figures discussed include Bedriye Tahir Gökmen, the first Turkish woman to receive a pilot's license in 1933. Despite facing significant institutional and operational hurdles – including the cancellation of her official practical examination due to aircraft shortages at the Vecihi Hürkuş flight school—she persevered, becoming a legendary figure affectionately known as the "Sister of the Blue Sky" (Gökmen Bacı). The study also highlights Leman Bozkurt Altınçekiç, who achieved international recognition as the first accredited female fighter pilot in both the Turkish Air Force and NATO during the late 1950s. She masterfully piloted Republic F-84 Thunderjet and Lockheed T-33 aircraft, eventually retiring as a senior aviation colonel. The study further analyzes contemporary shifts and specialized milestones, documenting the achievements of Özge Karabulut, the first female attack helicopter (ATAK) pilot, and Elif Gökçe Erol, who remarkably transitioned from a law graduate and assistant police commissioner to become the first woman to fly for the national police aviation department. In the commercial sector, the author examines the significant expansion of female leadership at Turkish Airlines (THY), highlighted by the career of Emel Arman – the airline's first female captain – and the historic 2016 long-haul flight to Chicago operated by an all-female cockpit crew. The abstract also notes the global professional reach of Turkish aviators, exemplified by Gökçe Kübra Yıldırım, the first Turkish female captain of the Airbus A380. Statistical evidence underscores this rapid institutional growth, showing a rise from 6 female pilots at the national carrier in 2006 to over 329 by 2025, with women now comprising 13% of the cadet body at the airline 's flight academy. Furthermore, the emergence of aviation dynasties – powerfully illustrated by a retiring captain sharing his final flight with his daughter, Cemresu, during her professional debut – highlights the deep societal normalization of the profession. The inclusion of aerobatic pilots like Semin Öztürk Şener further illustrates the broadening of professional horizons. The article concludes that female aviators in Turkey have evolved from isolated trailblazers into integral professional leaders, symbolizing technical mastery, gender equality, and profound social transformation in the modern era.
