| Abstract: | This article provides a detailed historical and technical analysis of the aerial conflict over the Khalkhin Gol River in 1939, involving Soviet-Mongolian and Japanese air forces. Serving as a crucial precursor to the air warfare of World War II, this confl ict offered a unique testing ground for new aviation technologies and combat tactics. The research highlights the initial technical superiority of the Japanese Nakajima Ki -27 fighters, characterized by their all-metal construction and integrated radio communications, which starkly contrasted with the Soviet wood-and-fabric aircraft and visual signaling methods. The study explores the unprecedented scale of the engagements, where hundreds of fighters clashed in multi-tiered battles extending from 5,000 meters to the ground along a narrow 60-kilometer front, creating an extreme density of aerial combat. The tactical evolution hat occurred during the hostilities is thoroughly examined, notably the Soviet transition to the highmaneuverability I-153 "Chaika" and cannon-armed I-16 models to counter Japanese dominance. A significant technical milestone discussed is the first-ever combat deployment of air-to-air rockets (RS-82), which fundamentally altered the dynamics of aerial engagements. The author also analyzes the human element of the conflict, focusing on the high marksmanship of Japanese aces like Hiromichi Shinohara and the arrival of experienced Soviet veteran pilots who shifted the balance of power. The article concludes that the lessons learned at Khalkhin Gol regarding aircraft speed, radio management, and pilot rotation directly influenced the urgent modernization of aviation industries in both nations, shaping the air strategies that would dominate the global battlefields of 1941–1945. |
