| Abstract: | This article provides a comprehensive historical overview of the development of civil aviation in Ecuador, tracing its journey from the inaugural flights of the early 1920s to the complex contemporary air transport ecosystem. The research highlights the st rategic role of aviation in overcoming the nation’s challenging topography, effectively bridging the gap between the Andean highlands, the Pacific coast, and the isolated Amazonian territories. Key historical milestones examined include the founding of SETA in 1929 and the subsequent emergence of Ecuatoriana de Aviación (1957) and TAME (1962), which served as pillars of national pride and economic connectivity for decades. The author analyzes the "Golden Age" of Ecuadorian aviation in the 1970s and 80s, characterized by fleet modernization – including the introduction of Douglas DC-8 and Boeing 707 aircraft – and the expansion of long-haul routes to North America and Europe. The study also addresses the systemic economic crises of the late 20th century that led to the dissolution of iconic carriers such as SAETA, ICARO, and ultimately the state-owned TAME in 2020. Furthermore, the abstract reflects on the current market dynamics, focusing on the successful integration of LATAM Airlines into the global network and the vital rol of Aeroregional in maintaining domestic accessibility. Special attention is given to the unique ecological and touristic importance of the flight routes to the Galápagos Islands. The article concludes that the ongoing evolution of Ecuador’s aviation sector, marked by the recent efforts to revive the Ecuatoriana brand, remains essential for the country’s integration into the global economy and its continued socio-economic development. |
