| Abstract: | This article provides a comprehensive historical and structural analysis of the evolution of Ecuador’s airport network, positioning it as the backbone of the national transport system. Given Ecuador's extreme geographical diversity – spanning the high Andean peaks, the Pacific coastal plains, and the isolated Amazonian basin – the development of air infrastructure has been a vital necessity for socio-economic integration. The research traces the progress from the rudimentary airfields of the 1920s to the sophisticated, award-winning international hubs of the 21st century. Key focus is placed on the Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, which was relocated and reconstructed in 2013 to overcome the limitations of urban sprawl. Boasting one of the longest runways in the region, it now serves as a major South American logistics center. The study also details the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, noting its historical significance and the 2006 renaming process intended to differentiate it from other regional hubs named after Simón Bolívar. The research examines the Mariscal Lamar Airport in Cuenca, highlighting the extreme technical challenges faced by pilots during high-altitude operations (2,500m) in close proximity to urban centers. Following a 2016 aviation incident, the airport implemented rigorous safety protocols for wet-weather operations, and local authorities are currently evaluating the construction of a new facility outside the city limits to accommodate larger aircraft. Furthermore, the author explores the Eloy Alfaro Airport in Manta, emphasizing its decade-long history as a strategic U.S. Forward Operating Location and its remarkable resilience after the 2016 earthquake, where it evolved into a seismic-resistant maritime logistics center for fresh tuna export. A unique part of the study is dedicated to Seymour Airport on Baltra Island, a global pioneer in environmental stewardship and the world’s first "green" airport operating entirely on wind, solar, and hydrogen energy. The article concludes that the strategic modernization of these facilities has not only enhanced domestic mobility and flight safety but has also integrated Ecuador into the global trade and tourism networks, serving as a primary driver of the national economy. |
